Preschool

Our nurseries have a dedicated preschool room. The preschool rooms are bright, inviting and set out in all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which the children can freely access. Here, the children learn through play-based activities and are supported and extended according to their individual abilities.

Throughout the structured day, our preschool rooms are a hive of activity where the children participate in confidence-building activities such as show and tell. They enjoy opportunities to work independently or in small and large groups, to not only develop literacy and numeracy skills but also to develop their independence, concentration, and coordination, and to grow at their own pace.

Your child doesn't need to be able to read, write, or do sums before they start school. When they leave preschool, every child will be at a different stage according to their ability. For example, some will be just forming the letters of their name, and others may be able to write their name and some other words confidently.

Throughout their time at First Place, we work towards getting the children ready to make the transition to school an easy one for them. In preschool, we particularly work together in partnership with parents to ensure that the children:

  • Are able to be separated from their parent or main carer.

  • Can clearly demonstrate their ability to listen and follow age-appropriate instructions.

  • Have enough of a range of vocabulary and language to express their feelings, thoughts, and ideas.

  • Are able to identify themselves by name, age, and state factors in their life, family members, etc.

  • Are able to interact in an age-appropriate way with others.

The preschool children are gifted a bag containing a water bottle and a book about starting school. They also enjoy an invaluable mini First Aid course, enabling them to learn some important life-saving skills.

Graduation

Most of our children start with us as babies and go right through to preschool. Celebrating their time at nursery with friends, parents and staff with a fun graduation ceremony is a wonderful way for them as happy, confident learners to be proud of their achievements. Creating a sense of occasion helps mark the milestone and teaches them about change and that moving to big school is a positive experience.

Once dressed in their traditional graduation gowns and mortarboards, the children take on the role of a true graduate on the stage as they proudly sing songs and talk about what they would like to be when they grow up. Each child is presented with a certificate and the gift of their mortarboard graduation 'year' tassel. Once the formalities are over the children then enjoy their graduation party.
